August 20: How to Hear the Voice of God

It could be said that hearing the voice of God is one of the believer’s greatest privileges yet one of the most challenging lessons. It is the Lord’s desire to be heard.

His voice is speaking as powerfully today as it has in the past. A Spirit-filled believer’s regular experience should be to engage in two-way communication with God. While it is an achievable goal to learn to distinguish the voice of our Shepherd and filter it from the voice of our flesh and the enemy, the process requires humility, seeking, and searching.

The good news is God is willing to speak. (Jeremiah 29:12-13)

  • Jesus, I know you often speak the unexpected. Keep me on the right path by helping me test what I sense against Your character and biblical principles (2 Tim 3:16-17). Let me be led by Your peace, even when receiving hard or challenging words (Col. 3:15)
  • I pray that as I purposely draw near and focus on You, I will receive insight into the spirit realm through dreams, visions, spontaneous thoughts, and impressions. (Acts 2:17)
  • Lord, I want to hear Your voice. Help me find a place away from the busyness of life – a place of stillness and quietness where I can sense You speaking. I long to walk closely with You and learn to function continually from a state of spiritual rest (Psalm 46:10).
  • Lord, with time and practice, help me learn to distinctly hear Your still, small voice (1 Kings 19:12).
  • Jesus, help me do my part to silence the noise and still the distractions as I fix my eyes on You and tap into the flow of Your Spirit (Hebrews 12:2).
  • Teach me to respond when you intersect Your thoughts with mine, Spirit to spirit. Let me not mistake my thoughts for Yours or vice versa. And if I doubt an unction is from You, let me accurately test its origin to determine if it perhaps came from my mind or demonic influence (1 John 4:1)
  • I pray You would confirm Your words through the counsel of spiritual leadership and those who care and pray for me most (Proverbs 11:14)
  • Lord, train my sense of spiritual hearing to precisely discern good from evil (Hebrews 5:14)
  • Help me, Jesus, to walk with an alert, attentive spirit and live keenly responsive to Your voice. Speak, for Your servant hears.
